"The competent men shall come to the fore, the laggards will go to the wall.
Such an exchange puts an end to shoddy workmanship and shoddy prices. Let a
man have to undo his shoddy work and make it right, and he will no longer
be willing to go on making such presents to those who have plenty already
and don't require more, and the public will have more confidence in the
tradesmen they employ".

STEWART Mc DONALD DECORATING was established by myself in Greenock in 1990. I specialize in high quality decorating & specialist finishes. I have no employees, and carry out all work by myself, giving customers the reassurance that when they employ me, they employ me alone. My reputation is built on a few basic concepts; reliability, expertise, value for money and unbeatable quality of workmanship, all of which has built my business on reputation alone.
PAINTED CHILDREN'S MURAL, OIL AND ACRYLIC ON MDF. See Trompe L'Oeil Mural section
Sprayed columns and cornicing, with Gilded Ornament and Wall Sconces. Scottish Castle. See Gilding section.
Apprenticed to a local firm in 1983 I achieved my City & Guilds from James Watt College, and achieved second place in the Crown Young decorator of the year awards in 1985. I left Scotland in 1987, and continued my career in Berkshire, England, where I carried out various high Quality Decorating contracts in the Berkshire area, including contracts in & around Windsor Castle. I returned to Scotland In 1990, where I started my own company. I have carried out many jobs locally, but have had many commissions all over the U.K, from the Highlands of Scotland to London.
Due to the many problems I have encountered with other finishing trades during the years, I decided to carry out all preparation work by myself, and I am a self taught plasterer. I carry out all preparation work myself, from basic making good, filling and taping of Gyproc wallboards, to the complete plastering of full rooms. Therefore my customers are safe in the knowledge that they have one tradesman responsible for a complete plastering and decorating service, from start to finish. My paperhanging experience ranges from basic wallpapers, to extra wide wallcoverings, Chinese Silk, Flock and Lincrusta.
I also provide a full, on-site colour mixing service. All colours chosen by my customers are mixed by myself , by hand, on site. This gives my customers the chance to see test areas of colour before the job is started, to aid selection, and even the opportunity to change the colour between coats, if wished. I use the Dulux range of paints, but can use any paint manufacturer if the customer requires.
For a five year period, from 1995 to 2000, I studied at the Bill Holgate school of Graining & Marble Arts, In Lancashire England. It was during this period that I learned & perfected all my Graining, Marbling & Decorative painting skills with the help of one of the world's most renowned exponents of this craft. (See Specialist Decorating section). I was granted membership of the Association of Painting Craft Teachers In 2002, and have since carried out a number of teaching workshops and various exhibitions & demonstrations around the country.
From 2010, I have carried out two day Graining, Marbling and Trompe L'Oeil courses and masterclasses for Dulux paints, at locations throughout the U.K. These professional courses are not only open to Dulux Select Decorators, but also to anyone with an interest in decorative painting. I have specifically designed them to cater for all, from experienced tradesmen, to those with no experience whatsoever. For details, see the Dulux website, under "Training Courses".
